Mobile World Congress Barcelona
The Mobile World Congress (GSMA) is the world's largest annual gathering for the cell phone industry. The next edition will take place February 22-25, 2016. The event has been held in Barcelona since 2006, and it will continue to do so until 2023. The Fira Gran Vía venue in Hospitalet de Llobregat houses the extensive Mobile World Congress, but some of the activities take place at Fira Montjuïc, which is located in Plaça de Espanya, Barcelona.
The aim of this congress is to represent the interests of mobile operators worldwide. More than 800 mobile operators from 250 companies of the “mobile” ecosystem meet during a four-day period. These include manufacturers, software companies, Internet providers, and leading companies from related sectors. This is an excellent opportunity for engineers, scientists, and investors.
The prestigious Ministerial Program provides the most influential telecommunications leaders with a unique platform for addressing the matters that most affect the future of the cell phone industry. In 2015, the Ministerial Program had more than 1,400 attendees from 136 countries, 69 ministers, and more than 100 CEOs.
In the successful 2015 edition, more than 2,000 exhibitors from all over the world were present at the GSMA. The congress is open to other sectors that are not as directly related to the cell phone industry. All industries are “mobile” and all industries are continuously expanding, so entities are able join this revolution by participating in the GSMA. It is no coincidence that the slogan for the next edition is “Mobile is Everything.”
The GSMA schedule includes a wide array of events, from interactive workshops and bilateral high-level meetings, to training sessions, interactive round tables, workshops, and regional summits.
Many networking opportunities are available throughout the four days, including lunches and cocktails on Monday and Tuesday evening.
Main themes of the Mobile World Congress
The Mobile World Summit is the most important part of the Mobile World Congress 2016. This exclusive event, which will take place on Monday, February 22, is designed to promote an honest dialog between the leaders of the mobile ecosystem and political leaders on the priorities and directions of the industry's future. This year, the event is open to level C representatives of organizations and members associated with the GSMA, as well as to all the attendees of the Ministerial Program.
The GSMA is based on projects and initiatives focused on the collective interests of the industry, and specifically of mobile operators. The key areas of the congress are:
Spectrum for mobile broadband: The GSMA leads a global campaign aimed at making sure that the growing demand for mobile broadband is covered.
Public Policy: The GSMA’s Public Policy team proactively leads the policy debate, represents the mobile industry to governments and regulators, and delivers a regulatory environment that maximizes development opportunities for mobile operators and long-term benefit for mobile users.
Personal Data: The GSMA works with its partners to bring to market digital identity solutions that provide a convenient consumer experience and low barriers to entry across the digital identity ecosystem
Mobile for Development: This is focused on bringing together GSMA mobile operator members, the wider mobile industry, and the development community in order to drive commercial mobile services for people in emerging markets
Digital Commerce: The GSMA works to speed up the deployment of the Mobile NFC (Mobile Field Communication), with SIM as the element that provides authentication, security, and portability through different devices.
Network 2020: The GSMA hopes to address the complexity of an all-IP communications network by ensuring devices and networks can deliver a native experience and that VoLTE (Voice over LTE, based on IP Multimedia subsystems) and RCS (Return Channel Satellite) solutions are established.
OneApi: A global GSMA initiative aimed at providing application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow applications to use mobile network capabilities, such as messaging, authentication, payments, and geo-location.
Connected Living: The GSMA has created market development programs aimed at promoting the use of a wide range of devices in education, medicine, vehicles, and public service sectors so they are able to make the best use of wireless connectivity.
Mobile World Capital: Mobile World Capital is a shared vision and a collective action aimed at transforming Barcelona into a digital hub while improving the lives of people. It promotes entrepreneurship and innovation, creating startups, and improving the performance of businesses through a network of local and international agents.
4YFN (Four Years From Now): 4YFN is the startup platform promoted by Mobile World Capital that focuses on how startups are changing the way business is done and how these types of businesses affect our lives.
Carbon Neutral: The GSMA is the largest and most important congress that promotes reducing the environmental impact of businesses. The event works to lower spending on printed materials, promote the use of recycled materials and electronic tools, and recycle the waste that is generated during the congress.
